Today we are featuring one of my favourite design classics of late- the Kvadrat Clouds. Now, to start off, the contemporary interior design landscape has been mostly characterized by hard materials: polished concrete, glass, steel, and engineered wood. While striking, this often neglects the physiological and psychological benefits of soft, tactile surfaces.
In response, Kvadrat, in collaboration with the acclaimed designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, has developed Kvadrat Clouds—a modular textile tile system that repositions fabric as a primary, active element in spatial design. Clouds constitutes a new typology within interior architecture, offering a scalable, user-configurable solution for integrating softness into built environments. This analysis examines the system's design origins, technical specifications, functional applications, and its significance within the broader context of material culture and design innovation.
The conceptual foundation for Clouds is in the Bouroullec brothers' earlier work for Kvadrat: the North Tiles installation, created for the company’s Stockholm showroom in 2006. That project was an exploratory investigation into presenting textiles as integral architectural components rather than passive adjuncts like upholstery or curtains. North Tiles featured an innovative click system that allowed fabric panels to form large-scale, three-dimensional surfaces.
Clouds represents the evolution of this prototype. The designers' explicit intent was to distill the complexity of North Tiles into a system accessible to a non-specialist user. As Ronan Bouroullec noted, the goal was to create a "simple and well thought out" solution that bypassed the need for specialized installers, enabling "everyday people" to act as designers of their own spaces.
This philosophy of democratic design is central to Clouds’ identity, transforming it from a custom installation piece into a versatile product.
Technical Information
The Clouds system is defined by a minimal set of high-quality components, engineered for intuitive assembly and structural integrity.
Each tile is a rigid panel upholstered in Kvadrat’s Divina, Divina MD, or Divina Melange textiles, chosen for their durability, colorfastness, and textured hand. The standard unit of sale is a kit containing 10 tiles, 30 specialized rubber bands, and 2 mounting screws.
The innovative joint is achieved not with hardware, but with elastic. Specially designed rubber bands loop through reinforced edges on each tile, creating a flexible yet secure hinge. This method allows tiles to be connected at varying angles, facilitating the creation of both flat wall coverings and complex, undulating three-dimensional forms. The elasticity accommodates minor adjustments and makes disassembly for reconfiguration or relocation straightforward.
The system supports multiple installation types, each with defined requirements:
- Wall Mounting: For vertical surfaces, the tiles are assembled into a panel and secured using the provided mounting screws. Kvadrat specifies one screw per square meter of coverage for optimal load distribution and stability. Installation requires basic tools: a wall plug, an M10 diameter screw, and a 3mm Allen key.
- Ceiling Mounting: For overhead applications, a dedicated ceiling hanging system (sold separately) is required. This kit includes two poles and corresponding hardware designed to support a 10-tile installation securely.
- Stability: For any suspended installation exceeding 2.5 meters in height, the use of additional mounting clips is strongly recommended. These clips, available through Kvadrat dealers, provide enhanced lateral stability and safety, ensuring the structure's integrity in dynamic environments or over prolonged periods.

Clouds is designed for multifaceted application, transcending conventional categories of furniture or decor.
- Spatial Division and Definition: The system can be configured to create freestanding room dividers or semi-transparent walls. Unlike rigid partitions, a Cloud structure subtly delineates space without completely obstructing light or sightlines, promoting a sense of openness while providing functional zoning.
- Acoustic Performance: A primary functional benefit is acoustic dampening. The fabric surface area and the three-dimensional depth of assembled configurations absorb and diffuse sound waves, reducing reverberation time and ambient noise. This addresses a critical need in modern interiors, where hard surfaces contribute to poor acoustics, impacting comfort, concentration, and wellbeing. As Kvadrat CEO Anders Byriel has emphasized, the significance of sound management in interior well-being is a driving factor behind the system's development.
- Tactile Texture: Clouds introduces a soft, mutable texture to interior surfaces. The play of light and shadow across its folded forms creates dynamic visual interest that changes with viewpoint and time of day. It offers an alternative to flat, monolithic surfaces, adding a layer of complexity and warmth to a space.
- Configurations: The modular nature of the system grants users significant agency. Tiles can be arranged in color fields or in combinations from the available color palette. It can be a flat panel, a gentle curve, or a more sculptural cluster. This allows the system to adapt to diverse architectural contexts and personal preferences.
Clouds operates at the intersection of several significant trends in contemporary design and manufacturing. By designing a system that is technically sophisticated yet assembly-friendly, the Bouroullecs and Kvadrat empower the consumer.
The Kvadrat Clouds system is a significant intervention in the field of interior design products. It successfully bridges the gap between conceptual architectural investigation and accessible design product. By providing a modular method to integrating textiles into interior spaces, it addresses functional imperatives like acoustic control and spatial division while delivering aesthetic creative potential.
More than a collection of fabric tiles, Clouds represents a coherent philosophy of soft architecture—a toolset that re-engages the tactile and the auditory as essential components of humane, responsive design. It stands as a testament to the potential of collaborative design thinking to produce new paradigms for interaction within the built environment.
